Giving Thanks
When I taught, I used to take 10 or 15 minutes at the end of the class period the day before Thanksgiving and pass out a 3x5 card to each student. I told them that they would probably forget to think about the things they were thankful for the next day as they celebrated Thanksgiving, so I asked them to list ten things for which they were thankful. After giving them a few moments to think and write, I would offer them the opportunity, if they wished, to share with the class some or all of what they had listed. As the students and I would share what we had written, it reminded us of some of the blessings that we had forgotten to include. It was always a meaningful activity for the students and for me.
Each Thanksgiving I try to take the time to create my own list. This is my list for this year:
1. Health (I am so blessed to have no back pain and good health.)
2. Fran (I never dreamed I’d ever have such a relationship. To love and be loved is everything. I feel God has saved the best for last.)
3. Family (Brooke Wade & his family and Brent give my life meaning.)
4. Extended family (I cherish the love and acceptance of the “clan” – as Uncle Ben used to call it.)
5. Friends (They say that friends are the family that you choose. I have a few close friends, whom I cherish, and many very good acquaintances.)
6. Memories (Memories of all the wonderful past occurrences, achievements and recognition, people, and blessings make my life what it is. How tragic it is to lose your memories!)
7. Retirement & Financial Security (The comfort and security of my secure retirement pension after 35 years of teaching allows me to enjoy these years. I am blessed not having to worry about money – through my pension, savings, & lifestyle.)
8. Maddie (My cat offers me companionship and warmth when I am home.)
9. Talents, Skills, & Abilities (I sometimes take for granted what I have accomplished and what I can do. I also get a sense of satisfaction and pleasure from using my skills for myself and to help others.)
10. Recognition & Achievements (I have received WAY more than my share of recognition for achievements – athletically, educationally, and professionally.)
11. Intelligence & Education (I’ve been blessed with some innate intelligence and quality education from York Suburban School District, Millersville State College, and Johns Hopkins University.)
12. Living in the United States (Although there are many problems in our country, I am so blessed to have been born here and to live in the best country on earth. It is indeed the land of freedom and opportunity.)
